About Reflexology

A reflexology model of the left and right foot showing a map of the body's reflexes

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is an ancient therapy that has been practiced around the world for thousands of years.  It follows the principle that the feet, hands and ears reflect a mini map of the whole body.  Reflex points on these maps correspond to the body systems.

Reflexologists use their fingers and thumbs to work these reflex points in specific ways to help ease pain, release tension, improve sleep, promote deep relaxation and stimulate the body’s natural healing power.

Known as a complementary alternative therapy suitable for all ages, it is a very safe and natural therapy that is non-invasive (we work on bare feet and the lower leg, sometimes hands and ears, so you only need to remove shoes and socks and roll up your trousers) and it’s designed to work alongside conventional medicine.

A reflexologist applies pressure to the reflexes of a pair of feet.

How does Reflexology work?

There are over 7,000 nerve endings in your feet, which is why Reflexology can be so incredibly powerful and effective.  By applying pressure to specific reflex areas in the feet these nerves are prompted to send signals to the corresponding glands, organs and parts of the body to help achieve their optimal function.  Improving nerve and blood supply, increasing circulation and lymph and all the while inducing relaxation and reducing stress and tension.  On an energetic level stagnation and blockages are released, improving Chi (‘Qi’, our vital life force) for some removing the unknown (unseen) stumbling blocks for optimal health.

Reflexology is a relaxing treatment, prompting the parasympathetic nervous system to engage (an incredibly powerful self-healing mechanism lost to our busy, stressful lives).  It is this relaxed state, coupled with the work on the reflexes, that gives the body all the signals it needs to do it’s best work, promoting its innate ability to self-heal. Leading to improved wellbeing, mood, sleep and for me that truly ‘amazing’ feeling

How can Reflexology help you?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy working on the whole body (via the reflexes in the feet/hands and ears) mirroring all the body systems. We are trained to identify and work the reflexes most relevant to your presenting condition.

Frequently Asked Reflexology Questions

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Holistic comes from the Greek word ‘holos’ meaning ‘whole’. Holistic health is caring for the whole person. It is tending to your physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs, being aware of how all these aspects affect your overall health.

A foot massage is a foot rub that will help you to relax.  Reflexology, with a qualified reflexologist, incorporates techniques to apply pressure in varied ways to vital reflex points on the feet, hands, and ears to stimulate, or sedate, corresponding organs and areas of the body encouraging energy flow to promote healing.

Clinical Reflexologists are trained to tailor treatments bespoke to the clients needs, they are not performing the same set routine on every pair of feet. They take a consultation at the start of each session, including a comprehensive medical history at the initial treatment to be able to work with each individual and treat them holistically.
